Endowus - July 2020

I recently bought Fifa20 when it was having an 80% sale at just $17.10! What a bargain. Played squad battles for 2-3 weeks and got my ultimate team to this.

Unfortunately, my PlayStation console seems to have given up on me a few days ago. I can switch it on but there's no display. The HDMI cable is fine because I can still project my laptop to the TV. So sad, the team is just starting to become decent. CZM says it is all fated, time to be a good husband and dad. I told her it is fated because PS5 is coming out. lol.

Risk Profile
Goal type: General wealth accumulation
Risk tolerance: Maximise returns (loss tolerance -60%)
Monthly investment using SRS: $740

I have modified my monthly investment in order to max out my SRS contribution for the year.

Account Summary

Capital: $7,450.00
Current: $7,455.96 (0.12%)

There are quite a few differences as compared to StashAway. Firstly, all the cash has been invested while StashAway keeps 1% of the portfolio in cash. Secondly, the fees are not deducted on a monthly basis. The Access Fee charged by Endowus will be deducted at the end of each quarter as stated in their FAQ.

As of 25 August 2020, the portfolio value is $7,807.23 (+4.80%).

Asset Allocation

This shows that the number of shares for each fund that I owned:
- Dimensional Global Core Equity Fund (123.4670)
- Infinity US 500 Stock Index Fund (1,391.4300)
- Dimensional Emerging Markets Large Cap Core Equity Fund (48.6990)
- Dimensional Pacific Basin Small Companies Fund (44.3970)

It will be great if they actually showed my average price vs the current market price.

Transactions

That's all! Overall, I think the statement is pretty straightforward and easy to read.

Syfe - July 2020

As mention previously, we started an Equity100 portfolio and realized that the transactions parser I wrote error out due to a few reasons and 1 of each, I cannot fix.

What is <0.01? 0.009 or 0.001? Showing <0.01 is just not intuitive. Furthermore, without the purchase price, there is no way I can compute the number of units.

Another issue - showing 0 shares in my portfolio composition. Again this does not make sense.

There is a discrepancy between the number of shares shown in the transactions vs what is in the composition due to the rounding error/issue. They should just increase the decimal places for the number of shares. I have dropped them an email. On a side note, I have never seen StashAway with this issue (shares are shown up to 4 decimal places).

Our Syfe Portfolio
Composition: 100% REITs
Dividend: Reinvest
Monthly Investment: $1,000

Composition: 100% Equities
Dividend: Reinvest
Monthly Investment: $700

Account Statement (Lifetime)

Our current tier is Blue (<$20,000). This is determined by the size of the portfolio which in turn determines the fees to be charged. The statement lifetime return is $872.68 which includes a $690 referral bonus. The actual lifetime return would be $182.68. Thanks to our readers for using our code!

Account Statement (July 2020)

The return for the month is $314.10 which includes a $210 referral bonus. This means our actual return for the month is $104.10.

As of 12 August 2020, this is our portfolio performance:

Capital: $3,000.00
Current: $3,872.66 (12.49%)

Capital: $700.00
Current: $725.23 (0.71%)

Transaction Breakdown

There are too many so I will just share the first page. Anyway, if you want to extract the transaction information from Syfe, do take a look at this article - Syfe Transactions Parser.

After parsing them into a csv file, I pivoted the data to get the following view.

Management Fee

The management fee can be obtained by $3,195.95 x 0.65% / 366 * 31 ~ $1.74.

StocksCafe
In my opinion, the return captured by StocksCafe will be a more accurate representation of our portfolio return as the referral bonuses are treated as capital. Having said that, I can also understand why Syfe treats them as a return instead of a deposit too. Just a different perspective.

Anyway, looking at the time-weighted return (11.49%) for this year, we can see that Syfe REIT+ 100% is outperforming STI ETF (including fees). In addition, if we were to look at the projected dividends till the end of the year based on the existing investment, we can expect $89.65 of dividends or $7.47 per month. Since the dividends >> fees, this is a pretty sustainable portfolio assuming if there's no capital loss.

If you are interested in signing up, do use our referral code (KPOBONUS) for some cash incentive! Invests $500 and more and we will receive a $10 bonus each. Invests $10,000 and more and we will receive a $50 bonus each. Invests $20,000 and more, we will receive a $100 bonus each!

Estate Tax - The Issue Not Addressed By Some Robo Advisors

This is actually a continuation of my previous post - StashAway - July 2020 + Happy 3 Years! It got slightly too long and I decided to take a portion of it out and write it as a standalone post.

Anyway, to recap, StashAway was showcasing the annualized returns (before fees) for their portfolios in their 3 years birthday/anniversary email which were beating all their benchmark from 19 July 2017 to June 2020. Based on our own portfolio (Risk Index 22%), I agreed that the performance has been very impressive (look at the above screenshot), StashAway has indeed maximize the returns (beating STI and even IWDA but lost to SPY) by managing the risk (lower volatility and max drawndown).

Let's take a look at our self-managed SGX portfolio.

KPO

CZM

Unfortunately, after 6 years of investment, we are not even beating inflation or CPF OA! Our money would have been better left in the bank (as of the current moment). lol. Anyway, we are not too concerned as we enjoy stock picking and believe that the performance will eventually improve. Having said that, there's definitely an opportunity cost. Had we simply invested in SPY or IWDA, we would have seen our investment double! That's why we are also diversifying out of the Singapore market. Our plan is to stay in Singapore for dividends and the rest of the world for growth.

If StashAway's portfolio is performing so well, what's stopping us from investing more money? It is the 40% estate tax rate on assets above US$60,000 for non-US resident/citizen. Take a look at this 2019 Seedly question/forum. It is interesting to see how the founders who are not using US ETFs/not affected are answering the question (MoneyOwl and Endowus) in detail while the rest avoid answering (StashAway, Smartly) or gave a generic answer that is equivalent to not answering (AutoWealth). FYI, Smartly is no longer around and Syfe was not available then.

Anyway, I first asked StashAway the question late last year, however, their response did not provide any confidence for me to invest more money.

That was when I started exploring other alternatives and ended up with Endowus, IWDA, and more recently Syfe. I decided to ask the same question again, not through the regular support chat but to StashAway Head Of Client Experience & PR, Amanda Ong. Her response was almost similar but with some slight improvement...

Firstly, it went from "customers may not be liable to US estate taxes" to "our clients should not be subject to this estate and gift tax". Having said that, they ended with the same disclaimer - "This is for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be tax, legal or accounting advice and should not be relied upon as such. We recommend that you consult your tax, legal and accounting advisors before engaging in any transaction". Secondly, she was willing to add the question and their response to the FAQ/Help Center. Prior to this, one can never find this question and the answer in any of the robo advisor FAQ (I tried looking for it in StashAway, Syfe, and AutoWealth but to no avail). Now you can access StashAway version here.

Not sure if the above gave you any additional confidence but I will be honest, the disclaimer is a huge turn-off. This kind of tax issue should be straightforward. Either I am subjected to it or I am not. Why the uncertainty with a disclaimer? In addition, the template statement (We recommend that you consult your tax, legal and accounting advisors before engaging in any transaction) pisses me off too. If I have one, I wouldn't be asking you guys. Why would you expect an average retail investor to have tax, legal and accounting advisors?? We only have robo advisors. lol.

Anyway, I have also asked the same question to Dhruv Arora - Founder, CEO of Syfe and his response was almost similar. Most likely not, go consult your tax advisors/experts but maybe yes, regardless good to go until US$60k. Uncertainty everywhere...

What's the plan now? We will still continue with our current monthly investment plan and reevaluate when we are nearer to the US$60k limit. Hopefully, by then the robo advisors would have sorted this out and declare openly that we will not be subjected to any estate tax. Otherwise, we are definitely not increasing our investment.

Alternatively, something I can think of that may/may not put some of our minds at ease is to introduce the joint account concept where our other half can simply withdraw/sell the investment without any issue. All else fails, share your login and credential with your other half and instruct them to withdraw/sell the investment if any unfortunate event happens. It is annoying that I am not worried about the company dying and losing 100% of my money but myself dying and losing 40% of my money @_@"

StashAway - July 2020 + Happy 3 Years!

Time flies, StashAway has just celebrated its 3 years old birthday! In addition, they have also recently raised another US$16 million in a Series C fundraising round bringing their paid-up capital to $50.7 million SGD. Among all the robo-advisors in the market, I have the most confidence in StashAway. It may look like StashAway hasn't done much since they last launched the cash management portfolio (StashAway Simple) but they have actually expanded to Malaysia as well as started getting corporate clients. Look at some of the case studies done together with some of the big tech companies to get an idea of their growth. StashAway will likely be around for a long time.

In their 3 years old email, StashAway was showcasing their annualized returns (before fees) beating all their benchmark from 19 July 2017 to June 2020. Do note that these are annualized returns across 3 years. For example, a Risk Index 22% will turn $10,000 in July 2017 to $13,310 in July 2020.

I got to say the performance of StashAway portfolios are pretty impressive.

Anyway, we have 3 portfolios on 2 accounts now due to our new strategy - New Strategy: StashAway + Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS):
KPO and CZM Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%
KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%
CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%

1. PORTFOLIO SUMMARY (as of the last day of the month)

KPO

CZM

Based on the statement (31 July 2020), our total investment is ‭$44,125.18! KPO gains $1,728.66 and CZM gains $‭‭‭179.82 for the month.

As of 5 August 2020, these are our portfolio performance:

KPO and CZM Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%: $‭31,505.14 (32.87% - Capital: $25,500)

KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%: $8,763.06 (30.95% - Capital: $7,450)

CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%: $4,825.59 (26.74% - Capital: $4,250)

From here, you can see the difference in volatility/losses based on both our SRS accounts which started around the same time but with vastly different risk.

2. PORTFOLIO DETAILS
Note that these are reported in USD.

KPO and CZM Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%

KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%

CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%

3. FEE CALCULATIONS

I referred StashAway to a friend. Hence, the fee stated is based on the monthly-average assets SGD ($25,000.00 x 0.8% + $2,312.30 x 0.7%) / 366 days * 31 days = $18.31. I exchanged 3 x 300 Shopee coins ($3 equivalent) for 3 x $5 fee credit too. Otherwise, it would have been SGD ($25,000.00 x 0.8% + $12,312.30 x 0.7%) / 366 days * 31 days = $24.24.

The fee stated is based on the monthly-average assets SGD $4,352.83 x 0.8% / 366 days * 31 days = $2.95.

StocksCafe

Evan (founder of StocksCafe) made an improvement where one can now benchmark their portfolio against multiple indexes/ETFs. Looking at the time-weighted return (9.73%) for this year, we can see that StashAway Risk Index 22% is outperforming the STI ETF, SPY, and IWDA (including fees). If we compare across the years, StashAway's portfolio is winning by a huge margin (33.16%) except losing to SPY (38.69%). In addition, it has the lowest volatility and max drawdown. This is what StashAway meant by reducing risk and maximizing the return.

Which is the best? Only time will tell :)

Portfolio - July 2020

I recently blogged about Our Baby Journey so far, do take a look if it is something that interests you.

Unfortunately, our portfolio has fallen below the $500k milestone after just 1 month. It decreased by -3.02% to $487,135 - $8,623.00 of capital withdrawal and $6,554.95 of capital loss. This includes $35,294 of leverage/debt (gearing ~7.8%).

If you prefer to look at numbers, this is the raw data used to generate the above bar graph. These numbers are as of the last day of the month.

"Cash Flow" is the amount of money being injected/withdrawn from the portfolio (buying stocks = +ve cash flow while selling stocks and collecting dividends = -ve cash flow)

SOLD
- Sheng Siong (18,000 units) @ $1.64

We decided to sell all our Sheng Siong shares (18,000 units) at $1.64 today and it has been our top/best investment after all these years.

After holding for about 1358 days (~3.7 years) with an average price of $0.907, we have almost doubled our capital with an absolute return of 94.54% and an annualized return of 19.58%. You can read more about it here - Bye Sheng Siong! Hi SATS!

BOUGHT
- SATS (4,000 units) @ $2.84
- STI ETF (1,000 + 1,000 units) @ $2.65 and $2.58
- IWDA (11 units) @ US$62.38

We bought SATS as we see it as an opportunity to accumulate a good business when it is in crisis/undervalued. It should recover eventually, just not in the near future. We also bought more STI ETF to average down our previous investment.

I have "force" myself to buy $1,000 SGD worth of IWDA. We have decided to set some rules for the monthly IWDA investment:
- Current average price: $57.357
- If the market price is above our average price, buy $1,000
- If the market price is below our average price, buy $2,000
- Must buy by last trading day of the month

As an introduction, IWDA (iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF) is an accumulating (does not distribute dividends) world ETF managed passively by iShares. This has multiple purposes:
1. Capital Growth - Determine if simply buying a diversified world ETF will outperform StashAway/Endowus
2. Leverage Collateral - It has 70% LTV which will increase eventually increase our ability to borrow more or prevent a margin call

Anyway, IWDA is highly recommended by ShinyThings from HWZ. You can refer to this summarized version here.

On a side note, we can invest in such a small amount because there's no minimum commission for SCB priority customers which makes our investment very cost-effective.

I have also decided to increase my SRS contribution to $1,400 per month with the intention of maxing it by year-end.

Our Monthly DCA for July - $4,550
$1,000 Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%
$800  KPO's SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%
$250 CZM's SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%
$800 KPO's SRS - Endowus Loss Tolerance -60%
$1,000 Cash - Syfe REIT+ (100% REIT)
$700 Cash - Syfe Equity100 (100% Equities)

Dividends
The total dividends collected this month is $1,126.99. The breakdown is as follows:

Company PayDate Shares Total
SSB Jul 2018 1-Jul-20 500 $5.47
Sheng Siong Group Ltd 7-Jul-20 18,000 $324.00
City Developments Limited 16-Jul-20 1400 $196.00
Chip Eng Seng Corporation Ltd 16-Jul-20 8,000 $320.00
Mapletree Industrial Trust - Units 28-Jul-20 81.33 $2.26
China Construction Bank Corp. - Class H 30-Jul-20 5,000  HK$1,573.83

Total dividends collected for 2020: $9,714.86
Average dividends per month for 2020: $1,387.83

Our Baby Journey

Time flies, Baby Ong is about 5 months old already! We just did the week 20/fetal anomaly scan recently and we are glad that she's growing up healthily. Shall take some time off this long weekend to blog about our experiences so far.

Gynae Review
Raffles Hospital - Dr Shamini Nair
A few days after we knew about the pregnancy (week 5/6), CZM noticed some light bleeding/spotting and we panicked. We have not even research or decided on a gynae to visit and was simply googling for the nearest gynae. Called 2 of them but they were fully booked and eventually managed to book an appointment at Raffles Women's Centre.

After understanding what happened, Dr Shamini was very assuring, told us not to worry and explained the possible reasons for spotting. After which, she suggested doing 2 blood tests (2 days apart) to see if the hCG are doubling. You can read more about hCG levels here

We also did our first baby ultrasound then. Look at how small Baby Ong was! Anyway, the result of the blood test showed that the hCG levels did double and she concluded that the spotting was likely due to implantation bleeding. We really like the way she engaged/assured us and would have just continued to visit her but she does not do delivery anymore. CZM prefers a gynae that can see her from start to the end so we went on to look for other gynae.

1st Consultation + Ultrasound + Blood Test + Medicine/Supplement: $395.60
2nd Consultation + Blood Test: $156.20

Thomson Medical - Dr Benjamin Tham
Dr Tham was recommended by a colleague and he has plenty of good reviews/recommendations in the SingaporeMotherhood forum. We visited him a few weeks later at around week 7/8 so that we will be able to hear the baby's heartbeat and true enough we did!

There really isn't much to fault him on except that he didn't let us listen to the heartbeat for a little bit longer and his answer to our question didn't feel as assuring compared to Dr Shamini. For example, CZM experienced discomfort/pain at the stomach area one night and we asked him about it. His answer was somewhere along the line now no pain all good, that night pain not good. Eh?? He also told us that he's very liberal and the mummies visiting him can eat sashimi in moderation. Eh??? Definitely not when the whole world/internet says to avoid raw food/sashimi. Anyway, CZM didn't feel comfortable with him as the gynae and that is what matters.

1st Consultation + Ultrasound + Medicine/Supplement: $318.85

Mount Alvernia - Dr Goh Shen Li
Similarly, Dr Goh was recommended by another colleague and she has plenty of good reviews/recommendations too. We visited her one week after visiting Dr Tham. She let us listen to the heartbeat for a longer period of time and was more patient during the ultrasound process as well as explaining various things to us.

Most importantly, CZM felt more comfortable with her. The only bad thing is Dr Goh usually travels overseas during the first 2 weeks of December which is the EDD for Baby Ong. However, we are guessing/hoping that she would not be travelling anywhere this year.

1st Consultation + Ultrasound + Medicine/Supplement: $345.05
2nd Consultation + Ultrasound + Medicine/Supplement:$241.60
Antenatal Package (10 consultations, for 2nd trimester onwards): $1,500 (excluding GST)
Week 20/Fetal Anomaly Scan ($250 excluding GST) + Medicine/Supplement: $351.50

KKH - Public Patient with Random Gynae
This was CZM's idea as she wanted to save more money on the NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) test. Thomson Medical would have cost ~$1,300+ (excluding GST) while KKH subsidized rate would have cost $400+. At least that was what we thought or up to a year ago based on this forum thread...

KKH takes both private and public patients. The difference is private patients can consult the same gynae and pay the full rate while the public patients get random/different gynae for every visit at a subsidized rate. One will have to first visit the polyclinic to get a referral to KKH in order to qualify for the subsidized rate and that was what we did.

Polyclinic for referral: $13.20

To be honest, our experience with KKH was not too bad. People (including ourselves) generally think that public hospitals would have a much longer waiting time but surprisingly, our 3 visits were pretty acceptable/reasonable.

Another pain point apart from no fixed gynae was that I was not allowed to enter the room when the nurse/staff was doing the ultrasound. Anyway, long story short, NIPT is no longer being subsidized by the government anymore and we ended up paying $750 for it. It is still cheaper but the savings are not as significant anymore. Having said that, the subsidized rate is really really very cheap/affordable.

1st Consultation + Ultrasound + Flu Vaccination: $109.29 (out of which $66.29 was for the flu vaccination which can be deducted from our Medisave. Hence, the out of pocket cost was just $43.)
NIPT Harmony Test (No more government subsidy): $750
3rd Consultation + Whooping Cough Vaccination: $92.14 (similarly, $84.14 was for the vaccination, paid using Medisave and the out of pocket cost was just $8)

Oscar vs NIPT
Both Oscar test/First Trimester Screening (FTS) and NIPT are used to screen/test for genetic conditions such as Down Syndrome. Oscar is a lot cheaper ($300+) but has a higher false-positive rate. Although the general advice is to first do the Oscar test and skip the NIPT if everything is fine in order to save some money but we feel that it is actually better to just skip Oscar and pay for the NIPT. The reason is we want to avoid the double whammy - scare from the Oscar result while waiting for the NIPT result (at least 2 weeks) + paying for both Oscar and NIPT.
