Ten Lessons Learnt from the Wedding

Like any major project, I was discussing with KPO the other day whether we should have an After Action Review for our wedding. Of course we will not be holding any more wedding, but hopefully this can benefit other future couples who are intending to tie the knot. So below are the ten things which we feel that we have done correctly / it can be improved:

1. Choose your wedding venue early
We started looking for wedding venues a year and a half in advance. As such, we were spoilt with choices as all the venues we inquired were available. We started by attending the BOWS wedding fair and also emailed other hotels which weren't on BOWS on their perks. We maintained a spreadsheet of all the hotels/restaurants, including the prices quoted and their perks so that it is easier to compare.

Some words of advice:
(1) It will make things a lot easier if you have a date in mind when you want to hold your wedding before attending bridal fairs/emailing vendors. You won't want a case where you have spent massive amount of time haggling on the perks, only to realised that they are fully booked on your wedding day.

(2) Personally, I feel that couples should start with wedding venue first. You will probably be enticed to sign up other packages during the wedding fair such as bridal, photo booth, live band etc, but all these can wait.

2. Choosing banquet in a hotel (over restaurant)
Though restaurants may have better food quality over hotels, I think people generally feel that hotels are pricier/more "atas". While this may be accurate to a certain extend (especially for those atas five star hotels), some hotels are in fact cheaper than restaurants. For e.g., I was reading online that the wedding at Summerhouse will cost around $160 per pax, while wedding at some four star hotels will typically range around $100 - $150 per pax. Not to forget, hotels will typically throw in free hotel stays, and may also provide free flow beer and wine to attract customers. Hence, even if you are on a tight budget, you should not rule out hotel immediately.

On another more sensitive note for consideration:
(1) Given that people's general impression is that hotels are more expensive than restaurants, people may generally "bao" more for weddings at hotels, especially for the older generations who do not due diligence online prior to attending the event. Though I must emphasize that this is definitely not the most important factor and guests definitely do not have any responsibility to cover your cost. This is entirely up to goodwill. After all, wedding is about celebrating this important event with your relatives and friends and we are glad that all our closest relatives/friends/colleagues graced our wedding.
(2) Also, there may not be readily available angbao rate information available online for restaurants which are less "famous". So you may end up getting more or less than what you can cover.

What do you think - will you bao more for a hotel vs restaurant? Leave your comments below.

3. Wedding venue - any pillar/restricted view?
One thing which made us felt very bad was that some of our guests had to sit with a partially blocked view as our venue had pillars. It was no fault of the hotel as our wedding coordinator did mention to us about the blocked view if we exceed a certain number of tables, but we simply have too many friends we would like to invite! I guess couples should either choose venues which are pillar-less or be really selective of who they invite (if the venue has pillars).

4. Choosing bridal package - do remember to try on their gowns before signing the package
I am glad that we did not choose our bridal package during the wedding fair despite seeing super attractive packages. I have read up horror stories of how people were "conned" to sign up packages at the spur of the moment, only to regret later when they realized that they have to pay extras for the gown they like, or when the bridal shop did not fulfil their promises.

The safer way is to set up an appointment to visit the bridal shop(s), try on a few gowns, before signing any package. The bridal booths at the wedding fair often do not allow you to try on their gowns naturally due to the limited space. Typically they will only show you their gown selections in their ipads but you will never know if you look good in them until you try it on.

I am glad that I have visited and tried on a lot of gowns before deciding on Rico-a-Mona. There was one bridal shop which sells its bridal package at less than $1000, including pre-wedding photoshoot and Actual Day photography. Though the price is really cheap, I was glad that I didn't take up because all the dresses look like they come from the 70s. Though Rico is pricey, I love their dresses and they will introduce new dresses frequently. They do not have any hidden cost, and any extra cost required is made known to us upfront before we signed the package.

5. Taobao, Carousell, Daiso are our best friends
Yes, wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, but many items required for a wedding will only be used once, e.g. bridal bouquet, xi wall stickers, brothers' and sisters' outfits etc. Hence, I don't agree with splurging on decoration items.

We started looking for our wedding photoshoot props and actual day items on Lazada as (1) online products tend to be cheaper (especially when Lazada has Taobao collection); (2) This is considered an online payment, hence we get 4 miles per dollar; (3) We have free delivery as we signed up for free 60-day trial Liveup Membership. We bought many items there, including paper cups for jing cha, wedding angbao etc.

Carousell was also another platform where we can get cheap second-hand items. And more importantly, you can haggle. We bought our groomsmen's bowtie there for $1.50 and suspenders for only $3. I also bought 5 xi wall stickers for $5 when retail outlets are selling one for $15 (and the owner decided to throw in a few more xi stickers for free as he wanted to clear stock).

When I first learnt that wedding flower bouquet typically cost around $100 - $200, I decided to DIY. The Daiso sells fake flowers at $2 per stalk and my entire flower bouquet costs around $25, which is a quarter of the market price. Of course real flowers will look prettier, but I think the difference is less significant on photos.

6. Join a Brides Facebook group
I was thankful that my friend invited me to join a Facebook private group for brides. It was a platform where brides shared their good and bad experiences, and also provide advice on things to look out for. I also bought several second-hand items there, including my kua shoes. It was also through that platform that I decided to approach Mr Tam Chee Wah to be our solemnizer, as many brides highly recommended it. Check out our review of Mr Tam here. Unfortunately, this group is only meant for females and only by invitation. Do check out with your female friends who had gotten married if they are in the group so as to extend the invite to you.

7. Check your vendors' schedules
One major improvement area for our wedding is that I failed to take into consideration my make up artist's schedule on our wedding. I only learnt on the actual day that she had three wedding venues to attend to and she was late for my make up. As such, everything was pushed back. Fortunately, I had some buffer time to play around with. Read more here.

I also learnt from some other brides that their solemnizers had agreed to attend multiple weddings. As such, the solemnizers were late for their wedding and made guests wait.

Hence, for brides with tight schedules, you may want to find out if your vendors have agreed to multiple weddings and either buffer time for any unexpected delays, or choose to look for another vendor.

8. Plan and allocate tasks equally among myself and KPO
Though KPO and I share many similar interests, when it comes to work, we can be very different. I like planning things in advance. KPO, on the other hand, loves leaving things to the very last minute. To avoid arguments and to ensure that we don't miss out anything, I decided to list down all the things needed to be done, and allocated tasks (including deadlines) to him and myself equally.

9. Ask for help
Don't stress yourself out! That's what the brothers and sisters are for! Set aside some time to go through your wedding day programme flow and you will be surprised that their opinion/suggestions may be very useful.

KPO and I are really fortunate to have a bunch of super helpful brothers and sisters who not only gave us useful advice but also loan us lots of wedding props and this helped us saved quite a bit on the decoration.

On the actual day, I was actually quite blur as everything seemed to happen so fast. Fortunately, our brothers and sisters were a reliable bunch and ensured that everything went smoothly and on schedule.

10. Managing in-laws expectations
Sometimes your in-laws don't explicitly express their opinions or wants and it becomes very difficult to meet expectations. Hence, it is important to manage your own parents' expectations. I asked my parents about what they require for Guo Da Li and gave KPO a heads up way before our meet-the-parents session. Hence, KPO and his family were aware of the requirements even before the meetup and everything went smoothly on that day. We also asked our parents how many tables they require before looking for hotel venues so that we know roughly how many tables to set aside for our relatives. No shock, no surprises.

Wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event and nobody wants to screw up his/her wedding. Hence, we hope that our after action review can help some of the brides-to-be and grooms-to-be out there! =)

Aside, KPO and I would like to wish our readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Huat ah!

An Honest and Brutal Wedding Vendors Review

KPO has been nagging all the time that I have not contributed to any blog post since the establishment of this blog. So in order to stop his nagging (and he promised to do 60 sit-ups after I write at least one post), here I am!

It has been two months since we got married (how time flies), and we have received our wedding actual day ("AD") photos, so I guess it about time to write a review of all our vendors. Details on the prices can be found on here - Our Wedding Expenses is Within Our Budget!

The following is our humble opinion (out of 5 stars):

1) Furama Riverfront Hotel (our AD venue) - 4.5 stars
We started looking for hotels in 2017 (1 year before our AD) and were initially looking for somewhere small (can hold about 12 tables max) as we wanted a small cosy place just to hold our relatives and closest friends. Given the requirement, we can only fit the requirement of 'solemnization' for most hotels (as the minimum banquet tables are typically around 20 tables). When we first approached Angela from Furama, we were delighted to hear that the venue allowed a minimum of 12 tables, and the price of a lunch banquet was not much different from the 'solemnization' package. The perks were attractive and we can 'lock in' the 2017 price though our banquet is in 2018.

Some of the perks are:
1) Free flow beer, red wine and white wine (in our opinion, please don't waste time on hotels which do not even give free corkage)
2) 2 nights stay at the bridal suite with free buffet breakfast
3) 1 night deluxe room for 'helpers' with free buffet breakfast
4) 2 nights at Furama Villa & Spa at Ubud, Bali (flight not included)
5) 1 night anniversary stay at Furama Riverfront
6) Complimentary food tasting for 10 pax
7) Free use of a function room for solemnization, teapot for Jing Cha
8) Other basic typical stuff like dry ice for march-in, fresh flowers etc.

For the price we paid (just slightly over $100 inclusive of GST and service charge), it is quite attractive and we do not have to worry about the alcohol.

In terms of payment, it works like most hotels where it allows partial/periodic payments until AD. To our pleasant surprise, Furama introduced an online payment system mid-way and we could use the DBS Woman's card for the banquet, allowing us to earn 4 mpd (cap at $2k a month). As a result, we managed to clock quite a lot of miles from the banquet itself.

Overall, we love the perks given (especially item 1 and 7). We heard that some hotels do not have item 7 for free, but they can only select it as part of 1 of the "wishlist". We shall not name the hotels, but that's why we love Furama as it is more "easygoing" in that aspect. The wedding coordinator Angela is very responsive on both emails and Whatsapp too. The banquet manager, Hayden, is also very professional and gave us very detailed instructions, which calmed us down greatly.

The only downside for this vendor is that they changed the wedding theme and choices of wedding favour less than 1 month before our AD. CZM does not like last minute changes, and can you imagine her horror when she has to re-select everything at the last minute?? I would have given 5 stars if not because of this.

2) Bridal package from Rico-a-Mona - 5 stars
We had a pleasant experience with Rico. I was first drawn to Rico because of the huge selection of gowns, and they are so pretty (so is their models). Our coordinator is Sinny, and she is very professional. She allowed us to try on many gowns before we signed any package and did not pressure us to get a package immediately. In fact, she encouraged us to go to other bridal shops first to take a look.

For our pre-wedding shoot (PWS), we engaged their in-house photographer Charlie and make-up artist (MUA) Miki. I will review Miki below as she was my AD MUA as well. Charlie was a superb photographer who had a sense of humour and this made our photoshoot less awkward/more natural when we smiled.

I think Rico is generally more expensive than other bridal shops, but there is no hidden pricing (unlike some bridal shops which charge extra for 'premium' gowns) and I love the gown selection. All other extra charges are made known to us upfront before we signed the package. Overall, I think it is worth the money and I have no regrets.

3) Make-up artist Miki - 4 stars
I researched on Rico's MUA and both Miki and Milly are the "hot favourites" and I chose Miki eventually based on her pictures on Instagram. Miki is especially good with eyes and I love how natural her make up is.

However, I was rather worried when she turned up >30 minutes late for our PWS. Though I don't think she compromised on the quality of makeup, we had to rush through our PWS and had to make some last minute changes to the outdoor venues.

We continued to use her as my AD MUA as I really like her make up, hence, kept my fingers crossed that she will be punctual. We agreed on the time months in advance and I reminded her on the schedule a few days before. I was made known that she will have a bride before me, but the timing should be okay. However, she was also late on AD and the whole AD got pushed back 30 mins as a result. Luckily we had some buffer here and there and made it in time for our wedding lunch. I later learnt that she had 3 brides on the same morning (*gasps*) and she had to rush to the third venue after my make up was done. Oh well, don't really think she should accept so many jobs on the same day as some people's AD may be really tight..

4) Jerome Goh Photography - 4.5 stars
We chose Jerome because I really like his photography and he is super responsive as well (typically replies within the same day). We took up the "premium" package which has two photographers as the photos of the second photographer were also really good. Both photographers were also punctual on AD and we were given the photos way in advance of the agreed timeline (the photos are expected to be ready only in about 12 weeks, but we have gotten it around after 8 weeks of our AD).

The only downside is that the photos taken by the second photographer seem to fall short slightly of our expectation. But generally, we are still pleased with our photos.

5) Sparkle Live Music - 1.5 stars
We have engaged a live band through Sparkle Live Music, and have selected Peixin as our singer + emcee because I have heard her both live at my friend's wedding and on Youtube, and she is so good. I will have a separate review on her below. We noted that Peixin is kind of like a freelancer, and there are a few different live bands online which works with her. We chose Sparkle Live because my friend has engaged them before.

However, I was very disappointed with them. Firstly, there were double standards in the pricing as my friend, who wrote in to inquire, was quoted $200 less at almost the same period of time. We were coincidentally discussing about Sparkle Live before I noted the discrepancy. Immediately I called them on this and they mentioned that the brochure that was provided to me was not up-to-date and hence the difference. WHAT??? Fortunately, the new price was extended to us (and hence I am giving an additional 0.5 stars).

Throughout this engagement, the coordinator, Prinsten is always MIA. Not only was he unresponsive to emails, his work is bad. He was supposed to come up with the emcee script which he promised to turnaround in a few days, but it took him 2 full weeks to get back with a script full of errors. From one look, we can tell that it is simply a template copied elsewhere (which is fine because we expected so), but he did not even bother to change the bride and groom names. The additional details we provided him was not added to the script as well. Where is the duty of care??

We also provided him our preferred song list in early Sep, which he mentioned should not be a problem, but only informed us two weeks before AD that there were several songs which have to be amended. Luckily both of us weren't particular about songs, so we just let Peixin sing any song which she prefers.

Damage: $1,564

6) Lou Peixin - Singer for live band - 6 stars
Yes, giving her 6 out of 5 stars. She is superb. Everyone whom I spoke to told me she is really good. Can check out her songs on Youtube too. We, however, recommend that you engage her through other live bands (see #5 review above).

7) Infinity Hair Art - 2 stars
This is a hair salon package which we purchased on Fave because it was cheap. Conclusion - if something is too good to be true, it probably is. This place hard sells like crazy, and it seems like the case for a few years, according to this review. It is my bad for not doing sufficient due diligence. Was persuaded to sign up some package, end up it is nowhere cheaper than other salons.

Damage: $510

8) Solemnizer Mr Tam Chee Wah
I first got to know of Mr Tam through a private facebook group for Brides-to-Be. Many brides highly recommended Mr Tam as someone bilingual, funny and brief. He was exactly the kind we were looking for, as we only had 30 mins for the solemnization.

I obtained his number online and texted him on his availability around 6 months prior to our wedding, though I was not carrying much hope that he will agree. Previously, I was rejected by some other solemnizer because it was simply too early. To my surprise, he agreed immediately and sent me some instructions on the process (such as to fill up some forms, and to write my vows etc). His clear instructions greatly assured us.

On the actual day, he arrived early. All our guests were engaged with his jokes and loved his sense of humour. More importantly, he kept within the 30 mins time frame so that I have sufficient time for my second make up for my banquet.

For brides-to-be, you can contact Mr Tam at +65 9380 1780 or email him at miketam@singnet.com.sg.

That's all I have on the vendor reviews. Now thinking back what is the one thing I could have done differently for the wedding, I felt that the entire wedding was over in a twinkle of an eye, so don't bother spending too much time on less important stuff like second makeup/march in etc. I will perhaps spend more time going table to table to chat with my relatives, friends etc.

Our Wedding Expenses is Within Our Budget!

Hello everyone! It has been a while and our wedding is finally over! Both of us have been upgraded from S to M (not Small to Medium but Single to Married) <-- that's what our JP (Justice of the Peace/solemnizer), Mr. Mike Tam Chee Wah said. The ceremony was entertaining and he was able to alternate between both languages (English and Mandarin) comfortably. We certainly made the right decision to engage him as our JP. One of my brothers was so impressed with him and tried to book him for next year but he was already booked. Do try to book/reserve him in advance!

Our wedding was exceptionally smooth thanks to all our brothers and sisters! CZM was also kind enough to spare me from those torturing gatecrash games and I only had to give a red packet + signed my life/money away to CZM (those contract where my money is hers while her money is still hers, do household chores, etc.). Unfortunately, everything happened so quickly on that day that we barely had time to interact/catch up much with our guests and both of us were feeling slightly unwell (headache, flu and no appetite). However, when it was time to count the ang bao (red packet) money, both of us miraculously "recovered". lol.

I might have blogged about this previously that we did not want to hold a wedding banquet initially but after sounding our parents out, we decided to go ahead with it. After all, we believe that a relationship is not just about us but our family too. Our plan was to keep everything small and simple so we had an initial budget of about $10,000 to $20,000 and I am proud to say we were lucky enough to keep it way below our budget!

Total Expenses: $29,858.63
Total Income: $23,406.00

Overall: -$6,452.63

Expenses

This is a breakdown of the top 10 expenses which accounts for 95.94% of the total expenses. If you think that we spent too much on a specific category/shop and should/could be cut for yours, look no further. Having said that, the full breakdown can be seen at the end of the article. We definitely took a lot more Grab/Comfort than usual because we were rushing/got tired from the preparation.

For those that prefer to look at pie chart instead of numbers.

Income

If we look at the cost of the banquet ($17,878.63) vs the ang bao we received ($23,406.00), we actually made a profit of $5,527.37. I guess this is what people meant when they say they managed to "cover back"? Realistically speaking, I think there is only an extremely slim chance of making a profit from the wedding after including all the relevant expenses and one really should not have such an expectation.

From the above breakdown, it is obvious that most of the money came from my relatives. How it works for us is when CZM's parents requested for X number of tables for their relatives, all those ang baos will go directly to them and it is theirs to keep.

My parents gave us $2,000 for Jin Cha (tea ceremony) and my 3 grandmothers gave us $1,700 in total for the banquet ang bao. These are outliers that really helped a lot. On average, our friends and colleagues gave more than enough for us to cover the cost of the banquet (~$102 per pax) too.

The one takeaway is even if you are not planning to hold a wedding banquet, the tea ceremony is a must! Hahahaha. The tea ceremony would cost you almost nothing (except for the tea set, tea + your mouth/voice) and you get lots of ang baos + some gold.

We were trying to value/include those gold into our income but most of the gold (5/8) that we received did not have any receipt with them. The overall damage would have went down further if we were to add the value of those gold in.

Hope you enjoy our wedding expenses and income breakdown!

Red Red Market for Chinese New Year!

Let KPO start by wishing all my readers a Happy and Healthy Chinese New Year! 恭喜发财,身体健康!Huat ah!

It has been 2 weeks since I last blogged! CZM (being one of my readers) reminded me that it has been a long time! What have I been doing for the past few weeks? Busy playing Monster Hunter World! Hahahaha. I am currently at HR (Hunter Rank) 52 and have clocked > 80 hours of gameplay till date. Shall stop here, CZM is already complaining she has lost her bf.

Apart from gaming, I am also busy preparing my wedding video speech for our parents (it is so hard to write mushy stuff in Chinese). To save money, I will be making all the wedding videos! We will also do without actual day videography since we are keeping things as simple as possible such as no gate crashing and everything (fetching the bride and tea ceremony) will be done at the hotel! Contemplating if we should be renting a wedding car on the actual day...

The last 2 weeks, all the markets were in red and I received FB messages and emails asking what to do, etc. My reply to them is the same, we are not doing anything and there will definitely be volatility in the markets. Technically, we did something, we bought 1,000 units of STI ETF @ $3.40 and was queuing for Singtel last week but did not get it. We are using money which we do not need in the near future to invest and we are prepared even if the market crashes and our portfolio drops 50%. The last 3 weeks, we have seen our portfolio decreased by $17,158.59 but life goes on :) Numbers are relative right, what is our loss compared to theirs - These 10 Billionaires Lost $40 Billion This Week As Stocks Plunged.

KPO and CZM Portfolio Summary

One can argue that protecting the capital is important, a drop of 50% would require a 100% gain to break even, etc. Honestly, who knows what is going to happen? There are studies that show missing out one of the good days can be just as painful - Cost of Missing 10 Best Days. At the end of the day, there are really no right/wrong/best financial decisions. Make one and live with it. We are investing for dividends, hence we are not too concern with the ups and downs of the market.

My dad recently received the "Retirement" letter from CPF informing him that he can withdraw his CPF money soon. If you are interested, you can find it here - CPF Retirement Booklet. As usual, he would ask me to explain what is happening and I told him that the government is giving him money, $5,000.65 to be exact. He was pretty happy and was saying that our government is good. To put it into context, my dad has been working in Malaysia for many years and is currently a taxi driver. As a result, he does not have much in his CPF, ~$6k+. He is probably one of the rare ones that can get close to 100% out! Today, the government announced that the GST will be increased to 9%, he said government not good. lol. I have not been following it closely but came across the condensed version by Seedly which I thought is pretty neat - Seedly Singapore Budget 2018.

Danger danger! New readers/investors, please do not follow or read further! As you might be aware, we are pretty aggressive in building wealth and we do not really have an emergency fund or a "war chest". We are exploring the possibility of using leverage to 1. further build wealth and 2. serve as our "war chest". People investing in properties and companies raising debts are all forms of using debts to grow wealth/assets. So what is stopping us from doing the same? We are looking at Standard Chartered Secured Wealth Lending specifically since our investment is with them. We were quoted a fixed rate of 1.6% + 1-month SIBOR (which has been increasing!). I guess this can be a separate post itself.

Weekend Bridal Shop Window Shopping

It was pretty random but CZM and I went to check down to a few bridal shops over the weekend. However, our intention was to check things out and not sign anything.

These are the bridal shops that we went to:
Rico-A-Mona
Yikeshu Bridal and Photography Studio
1728 Wedding House

CZM has been sharing and tagging me on a lot of Rico-A-Mona gowns on FB. She would ask me if this or that is nice and I would always say "all of it looks nice on you". Hahaha. Naturally, that was the first bridal shop we went to check out. We were served by Sinny and she was pretty nice, not pushy at all. She started by explaining the details of the package and then CZM showed her some of the gowns she shared on my FB page. Sinny let CZM tried all of them and even recommended her something different! When CZM first wore the gown and walked out of the fitting room, my heart melted. CZM is so pretty <3 Unfortunately, Rico does not allow one to take photo of their gowns. Anyway, seeing it on the show and experiencing it yourself is so different! In total, CZM tried 4 gowns (all very pretty) and we spent like 2 hours in Rico.

Next, we grabbed (there was $6 off promotion for 20 rides!) to Yikeshu Bridal and Photography Studio since they were having an open house. We were served by Eagles who also started by explaining the details of the packages. Price wise, Yikeshu is a lot cheaper as compared to Rico! KPO's eyes $_$ We asked to take a look at the gowns and was then served by Helen. Similarly, CZM showed her the Rico's gowns that she like but Helen was not very helpful or good in recommending gown to CZM. She tried one of it which both of us thought was not very nice and CZM lost interest. I am so wrong >.< Not all gowns are nice. The overall experience was so different and we spent about 30 minutes in Yikeshu.

We grabbed again to International Plaza and wanted to visit Alisha & Lace under the recommendation of a friend but they were out for a wedding show! Fortunately, 1728 Wedding House was opened! We wanted to check out 1728 because one of their models is our friend! We were served by Elaine who showed us their packages too. CZM then went on to try 3 gowns (2 looks nice but 1 with sleeve looks weird. lol). On a side note, Elaine is also the makeup artist for Mrs. Fish Bridal. We spent about an hour in their cozy small shop and left the place feeling extremely tired and hungry.

We grabbed to 2D1N Soju Bang and had a huge feast! lol. We ordered 2 BBQ items (1 black pork and 1 chicken) which comes with a free steam egg and a Kimchi pancake + all the free flow sides! I did not really like the black pork and chicken is always nice. Never really like Korean steam egg and will always prefer Japanese chawanmushi. However, my favorite dish is the Kimchi pancake. I would probably order 2 of that next time. lol. I know. There goes my weight loss plan for the day...

We are still undecided on the wedding stuff as of now and we have ample time till our wedding date (next year October). Do share with us if you had any tips or experiences in the comment or privately :)
