Singapore Airlines Suites - Book the Cook

Time flies! About a year ago, I blogged about Redeeming KrisFlyer Miles for Singapore Airlines Suites = 38.6% Cashback! and in a few weeks time, we will be going on our honeymoon!

Singapore Airlines allows one to "Book the Cook" (BTC) if you are flying Premium Economy and above. That essentially just means that you can choose your main course way in advance (at least 24 hours before the flight) instead of what is being served in the in-flight menu. The menu/selections do differ based on the class of the flight you are taking and where the flight is departing from. In addition, the food will be plated when served for Business class and above, with some of them being designed* by the Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel. If it doesn't taste good, blame the person preparing the food - SATS? lol.

Our flight to the United States is fortunately/unfortunately not the non-stop flight depending on how you look at it (the non-stop flight does not offer any Suites/First class seats). We will be flying to Frankfurt with a 2-hour overlay before flying to New York, JFK. The BTC menu is different when flying out of Singapore vs flying out of Frankfurt.

Over the weekend, CZM and I were having a hard time selecting the food! We have 8 meals in total to select - 4 meals each, 2 per flight:
SIN-FRA: Supper
SIN-FRA: Breakfast
FRA-JFK: Brunch
FRA-JFK: Lunch

Let's take a look at the in-flight menu first!

SIN-FRA: Supper

SIN-FRA: Breakfast

FRA-JFK: Brunch

FRA-JFK: Lunch

To be fair, the in-flight menu looks pretty decent too. With the help of Milelion Book the Cook Wiki (definitely much better than SIA own BTC page. lol) and some random post on FlyerTalk, we have decided on the following:

KPO

Grilled Beef Fillet with Balsamic Onion Sauce - Designed by Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel Chef Alfred Portale who was named Best Chef in New York in 1993. Seems like the best/most fitting dish for our honeymoon to New York.

The Kyo-Kaiseki is for the adventurous because the ingredients and garnishes changes with each season and is designed by Singapore Airlines International Culinary Panel Chef Yoshihiro Murata whose restaurants have been awarded seven Michelin star - more than any other in Japan. Unfortunately, CZM is allergic to seafood hence got to give this a miss.

The Boston Lobster Thermidor seems to be one of the popular/value for money choice. Would you prefer having udon soup, curry chicken or fresh eggs instead?

Artichoke-Tomato Crusted Loin of Lamb - I am not really a fan of lamb but chose this so that we can have more variety.

CZM

Inflight Menu - Roasted Bacon-Wrapped Beef Fillet in Red Wine Jus with Bone Marrow. Same same but different as mine so that we can compare which is better.

Sliced Grouper Congee - CZM loves congee for unknown reason. Hahaha.

Suckling Pig with Beer Sauce is one of the popular choices for flights out of Frankfurt.

Inflight Menu - Marinated Pot Roasted Veal Cheek with Dried Fruit Sauce. One of our favorite food is the pork cheek shio ramen from Santouka. When CZM saw veal cheek, it was an obvious choice for her.

Besides, BTC, there are other facilities/benefits such as The Private Room and in-flight WiFi (100 MB per flight - kinda lame but good enough for communicating with families and friends over WhatsApp).

Stay tuned to more Singapore Airlines Suites updates!

Honeymoon to the United States - Total Expenses

The initial plan was to let CZM finish all her itinerary posts first before ending it with the big question - how much did we spend in total? Unfortunately, CZM is getting busier with her work so I shall share the total expenses for the honeymoon trip first.

A quick recap - we spent 15 nights 15 days in the United States and 1 day (~7/8 hours) in Japan during the layover.

United States Honeymoon Total Expenses

Transport
Surprise, surprise. This was actually our highest expense. We rented a Mercedes Benz Convertible for about $2k. The rest of the expenses were fuel, subway, coach/buses, and Uber.

Souvenirs
We went to 3 different outlets and bought quite a lot of stuff either for ourselves or our family. Brands such as Coach and Kate Spade were having 70% sale due to the Black Friday week. We also went to Google Store and bought some shirt and bag. lol. This includes food items such as Tokyo Banana and CZM's favorite - Shiroi Koibito (白い恋人/白色恋人).

Accommodation

We spent about an average of $163 per night. Could have been more but I was able to find and make use of the BRG (Best Rate Guarantee) policy to bring down some of the prices slightly. We tried asking if they can waive the resort fee if we don't need/use the additional services they provide such as Wifi, water, swimming pool, etc. and were rejected.

IMPORTANT: None of the hotels provide water kettle. It was damn annoying because we like to boil water (Asian culture?) to drink/make tea/milo or even cook cup noodles (yes, we brought some over). In the end, we always had to go down to the reception/kitchen to ask for hot water and that means giving more tips -.-"

Flight
The cost of our flight was relatively lower because we redeemed Singapore Airlines Suites to New York and flew in Economy back. Hahaha.

Singapore Airlines Suites, Singapore to New York - 240,000 KrisFlyer Miles + $259.60
Alaska Airlines, New York to San Francisco - $403.70
American Airlines & Japan Airlines, Las Vegas to Japan to Singapore - $1,286.60

Food
It includes the 15% (lunch) or 18% (dinner) tips. Considering we spent 16 days there and 3 meals each day, I would think it is pretty reasonable? ~$65 per day and ~$22 per meal for 2 people! I think the best/most memorable dining experience would be the Beef Wellington from Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen in Las Vegas! We spent about $176.73 there.

Attraction

Klook is a pretty good place to lower the cost of the various attraction. In addition, it can be combined with ShopBack or KrisFlyerSpree to get more value/lower the cost further! If you do not have an account, can consider checking out our Referrals page :) Unfortunately, we lost money in Vegas! Was hoping we would win back the money we spent in Hell's Kitchen. lol.

Others

Random stuff such as data sim card in the United States and portable wifi device in Japan. KPO got slightly lazy and lost track of the cash. lol. We started with US$2,000 cash (exchanged our money in Arcade before the trip, hence the same FX rate) so >80% of the cash was still being tracked.

Cosmetic, Insurance, Tips and Visa
CZM bought Shiseido, Fancl, and Kose. The typical girl stuffs.

We bought FWD travel insurance.

Tips were mostly given to hotel staffs ($1 each time).

I blogged about the mistake we made when we were applying for our visa/ESTA here - Expenses - March 2018. We asked for a full refund and they honored it but due to the difference in FX rate, the bank "gave" us more money. Interestingly, I was monitoring closely but they did not proceed to cancel our ESTA so it became more than free.

To be honest, our total expenses were lower than expected (not complaining) and we certainly enjoyed ourselves (even though it was damn tiring)! If the above exceeds your budget, I guess you can try to cut down on the car rental and accommodation :)

Thank You Cathay Pacific! Another First Class Flight on American Airlines

By now, you should have seen news about Cathay Pacific selling cheap Business and First Class ticket at Economy prices on the first day of the year. That was how CZM and I were spending our morning! Even though the tickets were really cheap, we could not decide on when and where to go. CZM has this month end stuff at the start of the month (it doesn't make sense to me) so technically, we can only travel from mid-month to the end of the month. It becomes more complicated when you add in quarter and financial year end. Oh well, the life of an auditor/accountant @_@"

Some of the screenshots we took while hesitating/thinking if we should be booking it:

You know it is a mistake/glitch/bug when the Business price is so much more expensive than First Class.

Must we really fly to Vietnam? I guess so...
We even had the real deal at one point in time until the session timeout -.-"
When we finally decided to just whack, it turns out Cathay has already taken action to "fix" the cheap tickets by zeroing out all the Business and First Class seats so we could no longer reach the above pages. Disappointed - 失去了才懂得珍惜. After all, this was such a good deal in so many ways!

Meanwhile, I was still following the flyertalk thread (you can see who managed to book and when/where they will be flying now) closely and saw someone commented that HAN - IAD (Hanoi to Washington) was still available. We went in and booked it immediately despite it being operated by partner airlines - American Airlines!

We can experience Economy, Business and First Class all in this trip!
The original fare is around 12,114 USD per pax.
I manage to find a pretty similar flight (same timing and same operator but returning 1 day later) which cost $24,228 USD. We are paying only ~12.16% of the original fare. In addition, we purchase this as a "full" price ticket so we will be credited the full amount of miles (31,810 Asia Miles each, 63,620 in total). Asia Miles can be redeemed using Citi Miles (10,000 for 10,000) or Citi Rewards (25,000 for 10,000). Assuming if we were to convert our Citi Miles/Rewards over to Asia Miles, we would need about $53,000 SGD spending (general spending at 1.2 mpd) or $15,905 SGD spending (specialized spending at 4 mpd). We are getting First Class flights + Asia Miles for only ~$4,125 SGD (assuming 1 USD to 1.4 SGD).

Ideally, one should be crediting their miles to Alaska Airlines Mileage Program since there are 350% bonus miles but you should be aware of the T&Cs for those operated by partner airlines. I will be highlighting some of them here:
- Flights must fall within the eligible flight number range below, and your flight must be marketed and operated by Cathay Pacific. Eligible flight numbers: 0100–0999
- To ensure flight credit for international travel on American Airlines, the two-letter airline code (AA) must precede the flight number (for example, AA XXXX) on your ticket receipt or boarding pass.- American Airlines domestic flights with an "AA" flight number will no longer earn Mileage Plan miles.

Our CX 7XXX flights operated by American Airlines is pretty grey because it is definitely out of the 999 CX code and there is no AA code on our ticket receipt. Pretty sure it will not appear on the boarding pass too. Alternatively, what you can do is to leave it blank and do a retro claim on miles as suggested by someone in the Milelion telegram chat. Feels like there is too much trouble so we will probably just stick with Asia Miles.

Anyway, with the ~30,000 Asia Miles, we will be able to easily redeem another Cathay Business/First Class flight :) What a great start to the year 2019! Bravo to Cathay Pacific for honouring the fares and accepting it as their mistake. Having said that, I feel sorry for the shareholders >.<"

Honeymoon to the United States - Renting a $275,888 Mercedes Benz Convertible with Hertz

CZM favorite car has always been a Mini Cooper (I am guessing she was under the influence of Mr. Bean). She wanted a Mini Cooper as our wedding car but both of us could not bear to part with $450-500 just for a day where we will barely get to use/drive it. In the end, we decided to save the money by not renting any car for our wedding and spend it on our honeymoon instead. However, after the wedding, we realized that Mini Cooper was not available for rental (most probably due to the location?). Not to mention, we will probably never get a car in Singapore. Hence, we decided to let it go and splurge slightly. That is how we ended up renting a convertible for our honeymoon.

Things we did before making the reservation:
- Sign up with National Car Rental and got free Emerald Club Executive membership using the Visa Infinite referral link (looks like there is a better link to get Executive Elite membership using the Amex link instead - MyMoneyBlog - Free National Emerald Club Executive ELITE Upgrade Sign-Up Link)
- Did a status match to Five Star with Hertz on their Gold Plus Rewards by sending them an email at hertzstatusmatch@hertz.com
- Tried to use Krisflyer Spree (ShopBack equivalent - unfortunately, Hertz was not on ShopBack) to accumulate more miles/get more value back but could never reach the final booking/confirmation page. I gave up eventually but do give it a try if you are booking Hertz in the future
- Book Hertz using the Partner Offers - Worldwide: Up to 2,000 KrisFlyer Miles and 20% Off (CDP# 1076431 & PC# 204820)

This was the car we booked - Ford Mustang Convertible at US$1,374.71 (~S$1,924.59 @ 1.40) for 11 days (~S$175 per day).

According to SGCarMart.com, the Ford Mustang Convertible (25 miles/gallon) cost S$222,000! At this price, one can even buy HDB!

Things we did over the counter:
- We "upgraded" the car insurance because the lady mis-sold and told us that we are only covered if other cars hit us. If we were to hit another car, we will be liable for the damages. We only realized that we have been cheated after we returned and reviewed the receipt below! Do take note that there is nothing more to upgrade if you already have Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) as it states that one will not be held responsible for damage to the Hertz car in the event that any damage should occur, provided the loss or damage was not the result of any prohibited use of the car. Premium Emergency Roadside Service provides a bunch of services that are pretty unnecessary, something we definitely would not have paid for. I have emailed them and is in the midst of disputing that charge.

After signing a few documents, she told us that we will be getting a complimentary upgrade to a Mercedes Benz C300 Convertible (not so complimentary after all). lol. Thinking back, not sure if it was due to our Five Star status or it was because we "upgraded" the insurance. The total charges of US$1,482.01 were paid using BOC Elite Miles (earning 5 mpd!) which came up to S$2,082.37 for 11 days (~S$189 per day). On a side note, we drove 1,756 miles (~2,826 km) which is equivalent to driving in Singapore from east to west and vice versa 56 times (assuming the distance is 50 km).

According to SGCarMart.com, the Mercedes Benz C300 Convertible cost S$275,888! What an auspicious price! It was the nicest car we have ever drove but will we ever pay that price to buy a car? Nah.

That's me. KPO in his not so complimentary upgraded convertible

Honeymoon to the United States - 3 Days 2 Nights in New York

We had an extremely packed itinerary and were in New York for just 3 days before flying to the West Coast. The main reason why we flew into New York first is that Singapore Airlines only operates A380 (Suites) to/from New York (JFK).

I will be sharing our actual itinerary vs what we did on that day (after all things do not always go according to plan) so that you can learn from our mistakes or take note of the costs/expenses incurred. My memory is not good but fortunately/unfortunately, Google is constantly tracking us.

Day 1
Expectation:
2:00 PM - New York Public Library checked on Day 3
3:00 PM - Rockefeller Centre checked
4:30 PM - Trump Tower checked
5:00 PM - Central Park semi-checked
6:00 PM - Grand Central Terminal checked on Day 3
7:00 PM - Meet a friend for dinner checked
8:00 PM - The Gallivant Times Square (back to the hotel to rest) checked

Reality:

We reached JFK around 12pm, cleared the immigration and took a taxi to our hotel - The Gallivant Times Square. The taxi costs US$60 flat fee + toll + tips and it became US$70.26 in total. The jam in New York was so terrible that even Google mistook it as a walk! By the time we reached the hotel, it was around 3pm.

Trump shirt, anyone?
We walked around Time Square, Rockefeller Centre, and Trump Tower. One thing we failed to take into account is the time the sun sets/night falls which shortens the day significantly! You can see from the above that we walked to the edge of Central Park only to turn around because it was too dark then. The time was around 5/6pm but the sky is like Singapore 8/9pm.

We then had our dinner at Vezzo Thin Crust Pizza with our friend who went on secondment to New York for about 1/2 years. Do go early/avoid meal time because we went around 7pm and waited about 30-45 minutes before getting a table due to its popularity among the locals there. The pizza was great though, definitely worth the wait!

Day 2
Expectation:
8:00 AM - Empire State Building skipped
9:30 AM - Port Authority Bus Terminal (Bus Pick Up Point) checked
10:30 AM - Woodbury Common Premium Outlets checked
6:15 PM - Dinner, OTOT (Grand Central Terminal) then return to the hotel checked

Reality:

We woke up early to reach the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 7+am as we wanted to catch the first bus there. We purchased the shuttle bus to Woodbury too early, and only learnt later from our friend (above) that you can actually get it on Groupon at a discounted price! :(

Woodbury Premium Outlet - Not the crowd we were expecting...
We managed to reach Woodbury just in time when the shops were opened, and amazingly, there was barely anyone there. We later learnt that this was because there was an imminent snowstorm that day. So we were kind of lucky to have the entire outlet almost to ourselves.

Had lunch at Shake Shack outlet at Woodbury since everyone who has been to the US highly recommended it. It was indeed nice. The meat patty was juicy and the milkshake was soooooo good (but fattening). The milkshake felt like I was drinking melted ice cream. It was that creamy, that nice.

Snow, snow! Yay!
However, when the snow storm came, most outlet stores closed early (around 4/5pm) and so we decided to catch the earlier bus back to NY city. To our horror, the roads leading to Woodbury were in a massive jam and it took the shuttle buses hours to get to Woodbury to pick us up.

Most expensive Uber?
By the time we managed to board the shuttle bus, it was almost 7+pm! But this was not all, the roads outside of Woodbury continued with the jam as many cars were stuck in the deep snow. Many drivers had to get off their cars to push them.

As a result, by the time when we FINALLY reached NY city, it was already 1am. We did not have our dinner and was cold and hungry. What an experience. A note to ourselves, never ever drive in a snowstorm. It is crazy!

Day 3
7:00 AM - Breakfast checked
8:00 AM - New York Stock Exchange/Wallstreet/Bull Charge checked
10:00 AM - Federal Reserve Bank of New York checked
11:00 AM - Lunch checked
12:00 PM - Whitehall Ferry Terminal - Statue of Liberty checked
2:00 PM - 911 Memorial checked
3:00 PM - Chinatown checked
4:00 PM - Brooklyn Bridge skipped
5:00 PM - Newark Liberty International Airport checked

Reality:

We woke up early to get visit the must-see NYSE, Wallstreet and Bullcharge. We were expecting huge crowds around these places but were surprised to see no one. Perhaps because we were early.

We had the whole area to ourselves, selfies with the bull and the girl.
Thereafter, we went to the Whitehall Ferry Terminal to take the FREE ferry to Staten Island and back. We have researched previously and learnt that we are able to see the Statue of Liberty from there, so why not. Some pictures of the ferry and Statue of Liberty below -

The free Staten ferry!

After zooming in!

Do you see the Statue of Liberty?
As we were on schedule, we continued on to the 911 memorial. There was a Lady M store nearby and we bought a slice of the cake to try. It tastes pretty much the same as the one in Singapore, but more expensive due to the exchange rate. Oh well.

911 Memorial
We continued on to Chinatown and found a Chinese/Hong Kong restaurant with quite good reviews on Google so decided to have our lunch there. The food portion was huge, but the taste was underwhelming. I miss Singapore food!! Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the Brooklyn Bridge after that as we had an evening flight to catch to San Francisco but we managed to stop by the New York Public Library and Grand Central Terminal for some photo taking on the way back to our hotel for check out. Highly recommend these two places. They are so pretty! See photos below:

New York Public Library Exteriors
New York Public Library
After that, we went back to our hotel and took an airport transfer (Go Airlink) to Newark Airport (picked up at our hotel). It was booked the day before at $20 USD per pax (much cheaper than taking a taxi). I am quite surprised that we managed to cover most of the places that we wanted to visit in NY despite our super ambitious itinerary. :)

Singapore Airlines Suites Experience - SQ26 Singapore to New York

Having only taken Economy flights for our whole lives, we are always envious of those people taking the premium flights as they are always the first to board and leave the plane. Hence, we were so excited when SIA make the announcement to invite Suite Class passengers to board the plane, to the envy of all other passengers (#childish).

As we entered the A380 plane, the air stewardess and stewards greeted us by our surnames and brought us to our seats. They self-introduced and informed us that they would be attending to our needs throughout the flight. They asked if we would like a glass of champagne and highly recommended the Krug and Dom Perignon to us (only available on Suites). We agreed though we didn't share the same enthusiasm as we aren't very into alcohol. KPO even commented that he preferred Baileys to Dom Perignon. HAHA (#cheapo).

As the plane started moving and about to take off, the stewardess promptly removed our champagne glasses. We then started exploring the Lalique amenity kits provided to us - the male and female versions in the pictures below. Basically, it includes body lotion, perfume/cologne, lip balm, and facial mist. We were also provided sleepwear (S, M, L sizes available), eyeshade and a pair of noise-canceling headphone by Bang & Olufsen.

Similar to the menu in the Private Room, the food menu on the plane is CRAZY. There are two pages dedicated to coffee alone. For coffee-addicts, the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is only available for Suites class and I loved it!

Flight Menu from Singapore to Frankfurt

For food, KPO ordered from BTC, while mine is a mixture of BTC and inflight menu - see Singapore Airlines Suites - Book the Cook. See below for some of the food porn.

For starters, we had garlic bread and Cauliflower Panna Cotta with Malossol Caviar.
This was the first time both of us had caviar, and we absolutely loved it!

Next, KPO had some oriental pork broth while I had the Chestnut Veloute.

For mains, KPO had Grilled Beef Fillet with Balsamic Onion Sauce (BTC) while I had Roasted Bacon-Wrapped Beef Fillet in Red Wine Jus with Bone Marrow.

Personally, I think KPO's dish was just ordinary, but mine was fantastic! The beef was cooked just right and the bacon enhanced the flavour of the dish further.

For dessert, we were served the fruits platter and Moist Bitter Chocolate Tart.

After we are done with our supper, we requested to convert the seats to the lie-flat bed. In less than 5 mins, our room was converted to this:

The two bears in the photo are provided by SIA, not sure if they provided because they learnt that it was our honeymoon, or because they saw us taking photos of Donald and Piglet. First class service indeed! The bed is super comfy and both of us soon fell into deep sleep...

When we woke up, it was time for breakfast! KPO ordered the Kyo Kaiseki (BTC) while I ordered Fish Congee (BTC). No food photo for congee as congee just looks..well..like congee...

Kyo Kaiseki (BTC)

Surprise surprise! When we thought everything was going to end soon, the crew prepared something special for us with a congratulation card. Apparently, KPO told them that we were on our honeymoon when I was using the bathroom, and they decided to throw in a mini surprise for us. FYI, the congratulation card was hand drawn! So touched!

Thank you, crew of SQ26 SIN-FRA!

Before we knew it, we have arrived at Frankfurt airport! When we alighted from the plane, a staff was there to pick us and guided us to the Lufthansa Senator Lounge. She even offered to fetch and bring us to the boarding gate when the time is right which we declined. Needless to say, we did not eat anything as we were simply too full!

Our next leg was from Frankfurt to New York. It was basically the same experience, but shorter :(

Flight Menu from Frankfurt to New York

KPO ordered the Boston Lobster Thermidor (BTC) while I ordered the Suckling Pig with Beer Sauce (BTC). FYI, the suckling pig is not the chinese kind where the skin is crispy, but nevertheless I still love it. KPO liked his Boston Lobster too, just that he preferred the lobster in the Private Room more.

We took a short nap after lunch before ordering the last meal on the flight. KPO ordered Artichoke Tomato Crusted Loin of Lamb (BTC) while I ordered the Marinated Pot Roasted Veal Cheek with Dried Fruit Sauce (inflight menu). By then, we were already so full that even fine dining doesn't seem to entice us anymore. First world problems.

Once we are done with our meals, we were almost reaching New York. Both of us felt that this was the shortest long distance flight ever. We had never felt time passed so fast on a plane before, though the journey took almost 24 hours. Just like the SIA advertisement, the first class experience made us feel that they have lived up to their promise - no detail is too small. The service was impeccable, right from the moment we stepped into Changi Airport, all the way to New York. We will definitely miss this. Till we meet again!
