StashAway - February 2020

One of the big news last month was the closure of one of the robo-advisers, Smartly - Singapore robo-adviser Smartly folds business. It was very unfortunate for people that invested with Smartly because they will have to realize their losses at a very bad time. On the other hand, it shows that when these robo-advisers close shop, they will not run away with your money which has always been a big worry for investors.

People also started asking if this will happen to other robo-advisers such as StashAway/Endowus. As far as I can tell, definitely not anytime soon. Similarly, there were telltale signs that Smartly is not doing well. Firstly, they have stopped innovating or introducing new products for a long period of time when StashAway and Endowus have ventured into investing using SRS/CPF. In addition, both StashAway and Endowus have been very active in terms of engaging investors through their blog articles/insights/webinars. Lastly, I think the biggest red flag was when Smartly stopped accepting deposit/investment in November last year.

Take a look at the latest update by StashAway CEO, Michele Ferrario - An Update from Our CEO: 26 March 2020.

Anyway, we have 3 portfolios on 2 accounts now due to our new strategy - New Strategy: StashAway + Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS):
KPO and CZM Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%
KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%
CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%

1. PORTFOLIO SUMMARY (as of the last day of the month)

KPO

CZM

Based on the statement (29 Feb 2020), KPO lost $964.04 and CZM lost $‭‭‭19.63 for the month.

As of 3 Apr 2020, these are our portfolio performance:

KPO and CZM Cash - StashAway Risk Index 22%: $‭22,753.42 (2.05% - Capital: $22,500)

KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%: $4,479.86 (-24.02% - Capital: $5,000)

CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%: $3,244.95 (-0.32% - Capital: $3,250)

From here, you can see the difference in volatility/losses based on both our SRS accounts which started around the same time but with vastly different risk.

2. PORTFOLIO DETAILS
Note that these are reported in USD.

KPO SRS - StashAway Risk Index 36%

CZM SRS - StashAway Risk Index 14%

3. FEE CALCULATIONS

KPO

The fee stated is based on the monthly-average assets SGD $20,015.87 x 0.8% / 366 days * 29 days = $12.69.

CZM

The fee stated is based on the monthly-average assets SGD $3,035.60 x 0.8% / 366 days * 29 days = $1.92.

We used Grab points to redeem for StashAway credits last year (1,200 points for $5 credit) but I believe it is no longer available.

Looking at the time-weighted return (-4.18%), we can see that StashAway Risk Index 22% is "outperforming" the STI ETF (including fees) in the sense that it is not losing as much. In addition, it has a lower max drawdown but with slightly higher volatility.

Similarly, StashAway Risk Index 22% is also outperforming the SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust) with much lower volatility and max drawdown.

Which is the best? Only time will tell :)
